Bonnie’s research is at the intersection of fisheries, conservation, and the social sciences in Latin America. She has held a diverse array of positions in her field as an aquarist, marine science educator, and marine mammal stranding network coordinator. Prior to Bren, Bonnie was a volunteer SCUBA diver at the Monterey Bay Aquarium for nearly nine years, where she gave educational feeding show presentations. She was a teaching assistant for California State University, Monterey Bay’s Marine Biogeography course, which involved completing Reef Check surveys along the California Coast. Her passion working in the fisheries field solidified while conducting creel surveys for the California Department of Fish & Wildlife. This led Bonnie to work for the California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program, which assesses groundfish populations inside and outside California’s Marine Protected Areas. Her master’s thesis assessed the trophic ecology of Lingcod along the U.S. West Coast. Bonnie earned a B.S. in Biology and Zoology with minors in Scientific Diving and Studio Art from Humboldt State University, and an M.S. in Marine Science from Moss Landing Marine Labs/San Jose State University. Bonnie loves hiking and SCUBA diving, is obsessed with avocados, and enjoys creating ocean-inspired artwork.
